rhetorical analysis

vans advertisement http://webpages.shepherd.edu/EHOSKI01/AdIm/part%202/experiantials.jpg
This advertisement is trying to sell Vans shoes.
Ethos- vans is a well know and popular band. they have their logo at the bottom of the page with thier website. the picture looks cropped and put together professionaly. they have fine print on the advertisement. their is picture of what they are trying to sell, the shoe, at the bottom of the page.
Pathos- on the ad there is a young girls who is smiling at the top and the bottom half is her serfing on a big wave. there is a quote that says "like the ocean both beautiful and DANGEROUS". they are trying to appeal to a younger crowd. girls who are looking for adventrue and excitement in their life. the ad looks like they need to buy vans in order to have that. it uses bright colors that attract the eye. they make it look like the shoe is what will bring excitement into ones life.
Logos-they used words like dangerous and beatiful to appeal to young girls. they put a picture of the shoe on the ad.
Sufficient- it has the website and logo. it says what it want to sell.
Typical- yes, they over dramatize trying to sell a shoe. they used surfing as their selling point and that is a sport that is dangerous and very popular.
Accurate- the ad is targeting the rigth crowed. the shoes are not made for older women, but they are more of a trendy shoe for a younger crowed.
Relative- the ad is relative to its crowed but im not really sure how surfing relates to a sneakers.

i hate school so much i cant even handle it any more! these stupid deadlines every one sets at the same time. i feel like i never have time to do anything for myself or what i want to do because i'm going off everything and everyone else's schedule. i just want weekend were i can go out with my fiance and not have to worry about something due at midnight, like a blog. i feel like i have been constantly stressed for the past two months and i don't think tanner can handle it any more. i took only twelve credits so i would have time to plan my wedding but this feels like the hardest semester ever at BYU. i feel so bad for tanner because he is the one who has to deal with my nervous breakdowns every week, or so it seems to be every week. i need to learn how to set my priorities. i have been setting school as my top priority and that is so wrong. planning my wedding hasn't even been fun because it gets in the way of my school work which is so sad because i have been so excited to plan my wedding ever since i was a little kid. i need to forget about doing everything perfect and forget about caring what other people think, and just decide to be happy and grateful because life is what you make it. i need to have more faith in the Lord because as long as i prioritize the gospel he will take care of the rest and everything will just fall into place.

wedding plans

I went to the courthouse today and met with my caterer and florist which are actually my dad’s good friend and my soon to be mother-in-law. It went good, but it didn’t start that way. Tanner’s mother is very opinionated and has a strong personality and my dad is very controlling and wants it his way. So at first they clashed because she didn’t understand and my dad couldn’t explain because she was disagreeing and he wasn’t listening. It got a little heated but eventually cooled down once my mom stepped in and calmed my dad down and explained to her what we meant. It never turned to an argument it was just a little heated. I am glad I finally got that taken care of though. She has been trying to ask me questions over the phone about the flowers and I think we often misunderstand each other. When we were finished I went to practice and that sometimes calms me down to be active. So it was nice, especially since the weather was so beautiful today. We have a game this weekend against San Diego State at 5 in San Diego. We have to drive again which I hate so much because it’s a ten to twelve hour drive and I get car sick so I can’t read or do anything. Last time we went to California I brought my computer and a movie but forgot to charge my computer so that was no use. Tournaments are fun, but sometimes too much fun because there’s never enough time to do home work, but it’s worth it.

IA: anything that covers the low paying jobs strengthens the economy.
WATCO taking God out of the institution on american culture.

free write-visit to the utah state prison

the prison trip was defiantly one of the most interesting college experiences i have had so far. when we first got there we went to an area of the prison were they have programs for prisoners who want to better their current situations. they have programs you can get a GED, culinary arts degree or even have a job. these facilities were much cleaner and the prisoner wore collared shirts. at first we watched a movie explaining what the facility did, then a panel of about six prisoners came out to talk to us. we were given the opportunity to ask them any questions we wanted to. i asked about the jobs they were able to hold and how much they made. these prisoners had to work their way up to these programs not just anyone can make it and stay. they view this facility as an opportunity to change and don't take it lightly. it was interesting to see how much gratitude they showed toward this program given their current situation. they are sitting in prison and are still grateful for the opportunity to change and don't take it lightly. it was interesting to see how much gratitude they showed toward this program given their current situation. they are sitting in prison and are still grateful for the opportunity they have to learn and hold some responsibility.

Rhetorical analysis-army ad

WATCO joining the ROTC army on life experience
Claim: Joining the ROTC army will increase life experience.
Reason: because joining the ROTC does not limit the students to just a class room.
IA: anything that does not limit the student to just a class room will increase life experiences.
Ethos: the ROTC is credible because it is stationed at many universities including BYU. it is associated with the army as a training course. they have requirement to enlist. the ad shows someone in camouflage. it is for the university of Iowa. has the US Army logo. it looks official not sloppy. gives a the phone number of an officer and a website.
Pathos: it would appeal to someone who likes adventure when it says, "our classrooms know no boundaries." implying that it is now boring and you will not be constrained to a classroom. shows someone belaying in the air. you cant see the ground or what they are attached to, the encourages excitement and risk.
Logos: specifies who they are targeting, freshman and sophomores. goes into more detail in the small print. use the wording to target people they want. they want someone who is a student and will push them self.

technical application

so we got our papers back this week and i realized i have made the same mistakes on my parenting essay as i did on my health essay. Im glad we could get them back before the second paper is due. i thought i would think about a new enthymeme for my health paper for the review because it was a little weak right now its.
WATCO eating disorders on young women's health
claim: eating disorders have a negative cause and effect on young women's health
because eating disorders are not in order with the bodies natural digestive system.
Mrs. Esplin said my B term is weak and not sure if the audience would disagree. now that i look at it i would have to agree. so im going to brainstorm some ideas for now.
Watco: eating disorders on addiction
i need a claim that my audience (middle school girls) would disagree with.
Claim: eating disorders lead to a long lasting addiction.
i would think this would be a better claim because maybe girls don't realize how addictive and how dangerous an addiction of any kind can be, especially an addiction this harmful to the body. it could be compared to a drug addiction.

Bridal Shower

Today after practiced my mom called and asked if i could come over and help her pack. i agreed and got there around eight. when i walked in the door there was pink heart decorations and table cloth with food. i asked my mom what it was all for and my friends popped out and surprised me for my bridal shower! i was so surprised because i didn't expect anything. i went with my hair in a pony tail and no makeup and sweats. i didn't even have my ring on because i thought i was going to be packing. we started by looking at my engagement pictures and eating food. then we played games and won prizes. earlier that day my friends went to Tanner's and filmed him answering questions about when and how we started dating and got engaged. then they filmed me and asked the same questions and we compared. we played one game were they would asked me a question and i would answer then they would show tanners answer and if i got it wrong i had to chew a piece of bubble gum...i got eight wrong! then opening presents was good i got some fun stuff. it was my roommates and some other friends who did it with me and my mom and aunt helped. it was so fun!

rhetorical analysis-ski goggle ad

Ad for spy soldier goggles.
Audience: skier and snowboarders who like discounts.
WATCO spy soldier goggles on ski experience.
Claim: spy solder goggles betters your ski experience.
Reason: because Spy soldiers goggles prevents fogging and filters bright light.
IA: any goggles that prevent fogging and filters bright light will better you ski experience.
Ethos: spy is a popular brand so you know its reliable. there is a one year warranty. the price is visible. it gives a description. official website. have used website before and its reliable. theres a return poicy. contact info.
Pathos: comedy effect. It says "don't fry your eyeballs- wear the spy soldier goggles with spectra mirror lenses." it relates to ski/snowboard events. description talks about common problems with goggles. show two different colors to appeal to different people.
Logos: gives lots of detail. gives stats. shows pictures. shows the discount.

Rhetorical analysis-Mac commercial

I am doing a Mac vs. PC commercial www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQb_Q8WRL_g
WATCO buying a Mac on computer satisfaction.
Claim: Buying a Mac will improve your computer satisfaction.
Reason: because Mac's, unlike PC's, don't get viruses.
IA: any computer that doesn't get viruses will improve your computer satisfaction.
Logos: viruses are common among PC's so introducing Mac's as virus free will encourage people to buy a Mac.
Ethos: previous Mac products have been consistently reliable. At the end of the commercial they show the new apple desktop. in the commercial he mentions how many viruses were out there for PC's, 114,ooo.
Pathos: the big guy is a sick PC, and no one likes to be sick. they are trying to relate human feelings to a machine. people don't like to be sick and when they see how the PC gets sick they think they can relate, and when the Mac doesn't get sick they see it's more reliable. since they don't like to be sick they don't want their computers to be either.

IA: any parent that does not show enough love and consideration will have a negative effect on adolescent development.

free write-wedding plans

wow planning a wedding is hard, or at least for me it is. Im so indecisive and can never make a decision. like the other day we were trying to pick invitations and we were there for hours and by the time we left i still didn't know what i wanted. After leaving and thinking about it for a while i think i finally made a decision. i think they are going to be a cream or champaign color with a olive green border and my fiance and my name is going to be in olive green, the rest of the writing will be in black. I was contemplating this super decorative one but I think for now the simpler the better. we are getting engagement pictures this weekend up at bridal vail falls and i thought the olive green would look good with out door pictures, plus its one of my wedding colors. there is still so much to do Im so grateful my family lives close by so they can help. tanners mom is doing the flowers but i feel bad because i don't know anything about flowers so I'm not much help but she has great taste so it will be fine. i am so excited and ready to get married. we have only been engaged for about a month and a half and it feels like forever! i love him so much and cant wait to spend forever with him!

rhetorical analysis

Im still not sure what i want to do my paper B in so I have done a little bit of research and Im going to brainstorm some WATCO ideas.
WATCO single-parent families on children
WATCO authoritarian parenting on children
WATCO authoritarian or controlling parenting on children self-esteem
WATCO economic status on abusive homes
WATCO wealth on parenting style
WATCO foster children on parenting style
WATCO age of first child born on parenting style
i like this last one maybe my audience could be young adults or teens who want kids or are not being safe. or maybe something like WATCO parents age when first child born on parenting style. any topic would be fine its just finding research thats going to be hard.

This week has been really busy with school, lacrosse and planning the wedding. i didn't really think i was feeling too stressed until today when i just wanted to have a nervous break down at practice for practically no reason. i guess i didn't realize how much i was doing and I'm still not done. i wont be done until this weekend, i just hope i don't get the flu. it seems to be going around and lasting a lot longer then usual. it like a five day fever flu. my fiance got it over the weekend and hasn't been able to go to school the past couple days cause he cant even get out of bed. i tried to do everything i could to help him; food, meds, ice cream etc... He started feeling better today and we were able to go to dinner with his brother and sister in-law tonight. i just hope i don't get it from spending so much time around him.

technical application

i was going to start with rhetorical analysis this week but i don't have a topic for my paper yet so i cant research it yet. so i thought i would brianstorm for a few minuets. while i was reading other blogs i saw some good ideas but nothing that really stuck out to me. it might be because i dont feel that any topic on parenting can be persuasive and find research. maybe i could do something on authoritative parenting because during my presentation in class i found that the style of parenting is favored among researchers, but some students in class pointed out that it is good but unrealistic to be like that in every situation. so maybe WATCO autoritative parenting on the parent. or something that has to do with all of the parenting styles. oh, or something with single parent homes, WATCO single parent homes on child development.

technical application

I have to write a new introduction for my paper so i thought i would brainstorm a little here first. I was thinking maybe a narrative because thats the best way to get my attention in a paper.
#1- In China the women used to wrap their feet starting at a very young age so their feet wouldn't grow because small feet was seen a beautiful. In some african cultures it is seen as beautiful to pierce rings through their nose or pierce their body because the red bumps symbolize authority. In india they put hoops through their ears. In america young women are starving themselves because being thin in America is beautiful. Learning about different countries and what they do to symbolize beauty we tend to judge those people and think they are weird or crazy, but when in fact we do the same thing here in America.
#2- I had a friend in high school that told me she was bulimic and wanted to get help. I asked why she did it, and she told me people liked her better when she was thinner and everyone wants to be her friend. I didn't understand because she already had a lot of friends and everyone already liked her. she was a great student that got good grades, was on the student counsel and was involved in other various school activities. In america beauty has been perceived as being thin, and young women are going to any length to achieve this.

rhetorical analysis

This is an article i read for my first paper its called The phenomenon of compulsive overeating in a selected group of professional women. It tries to give an explanation as to why women would develop this condition.

Audience: others in health profession

WATCO compulsive overeating on professional women.
Claim: compulsive overeating has an addictive effect on professional women.
Reason: because compulsive overeating had recurrent themes that emerged from the data.
IA: anything that has an addictive effect on professional women has recurrent themes that emerge.

Sufficient: they did qualitative research instead of quantitative. this way researchers could learn what the participant wanted to say instead of having bias multiple choice questions the researchers just generalize.

Typical: This is a typical approach to a research article and how they presented it. they showed their methods and findings. compulsive still does not have a basis as to why people develop it and so the researcher asked those with this addiction.

Accurate: very credible. the author is a professor at a university in the united states. it comes from a well know credible journal. the professor doesn't seem bias, just states the findings.

Relevant: the audience is health professional who will be able to use the information in their field of work and build off of it for further research.

first tournament

Well, i just got back from my first tournament and it didn't go so well. we lost all four games, but I'm okay with that. we lost our entire starting line up and this is supposed to be a building year. we will be okay throughout the rest of the season because of how much we learned this tournament. Each game we played much better and each team we higher in rank. we put up a good fight considering how new our team is. it was a great time for all of the girls to get to know each other also. we drove 6 hours to vegas, slept, woke, and drove another 6 hours to santa Barbara. my family, fiance and his parents all came to watch and i really appreciated the support. i drove back to utah with my fiance, it was a lot better then with my team. we went to dinner with my parents and his parents and we talked about wedding plans for the reception. i feel so bad because i am so indecisive that it is taking so long to plan everything. I'm sure it will all work out though, i just need to make some choices and stick with them.

technical analysis

I’m not sure what I want to write about so I thought I would brainstorm and one of the best ways is to write for 5 minutes straight. I know the topic is health and we can write on anything we want. I was thinking the easiest would be on eating disorders and the effects it has on teens. Maybe I could say what the reasons are for starting a eating disorder, the effects long term and short term. Im not sure I feel like that’s to simple but I really don’t want to do it on heath care in the united states, but it is such a big problem in our society today. Well maybe I could if I did it on something like comparing socialisms and free market health care. I would defiantly argue for free market because I thing social health care would reduce the quality of health care and I would rather have good and expensive then bad and cheap. I would also want to do eating disorders because I had a few good friends in high school who had bulimia and I would like to learn more about it. But I’m worried that I won’t have enough to say about it or there won’t be enough diversity in the research and it will all say they same thing. I could also do something that’s not eating disorders exactly. I would want my audience to be Jr. high girls or maybe elementary age because if you educate early there is less of a chance of them developing it. WATCO eating disorders on young women’s health, Claim: eating disorders have a negative effect on young women’s health. Reason: because eating disorders are not a natural part of the digestive system. IA: anything that is not a natural part of the digestive system will have a negative effect on young women’s health.

lacrosse practice has been going really well the past couple of practices. The girls are really starting to click on the field. Last thursday at practice it started to get a little bit intense and i got hit in the face with a stick while going for a ground ball. Now I have this huge bruise on my chin that is black and purple. It hurt really bad when it happen and it is still a little numb. This weekend we are going to Santa Barbara, California for a tournament. We are playing the top ranked teams in the nation. I think we will do just fine because we have great team chemistry and have started to connect on the field. My whole family will be there to watch and Tanner's parents will be there also. So Im kind of nervous to have so many people there but tanners parents have never seen a game of lacrosse so they wont know really know what's going on anyway and my parents have been watching me play my whole life. we have one game friday afternoon then three on saturday spread though out the day. Ill drive there with my team and drive back with my fiance. Im excited to see how we will do, it will be fun.

Rhetorical Analysis

I went to 24 hour fitness at the beginning of this semester to get a gym pass.
Audience: Me, 20 years old, BYU student who plays Lacrosse and needs to get in shape before the season starts. I’m trying to decide between 24 hr and Gold’s gym. I need to be able to freeze or cancel my account when lacrosse season starts because I will be working out with my team and don’t want to pay every month for a gym I am not using.
Argument: They want me to get a member ship with them. WATCO me getting membership at 24hr on working with my schedule.
Claim: If I get a membership at 24 hr they will work with my schedule.
Reason: Because if I get a membership at 24hr they will let me freeze or cancel my account at any time without charge.
IA: Any gym that lets me freeze or cancel my account at any time without charge will work with my schedule.
Ethos: The sales women was wearing a 24hr shirt with a collar. She had a flip book with her whole presentation on it. She talked really fast and could give me prices and answer questions I had.
Pathos: she tried to work with my schedule and acted like she really cared if 24 was the best for me. She threw in how it was more convenient for me. She acted like she was making this huge sacrifice if she gave me this discount for signing with them that night. Then one of her friends came by and gave her a flyer on if I signed up today I get ten dollars off ever month, and she acted all excited and I’m not going to lie it made me all excited too.
Logos: she made it sound like 24 hour was the only gym that could work with my schedule and satisfaction.
Effective: yes, I signed up without even looking at Gold’s Gym.

lacrosse

i started playing lacrosse my sophomore year of high school. when i graduated i came to BYU and made their lacrosse team. even though it is a club team it is still really competitive. when i tried out my freshman year i didn't event want to play, my parents were the ones who wanted me to play. regardless, i made the team. it was such a different pace from high school. the ball and the players moved so much faster and i could barely keep up. after that i wasn't sure if i would play any more seasons, but i did. now that i look back i am so glad i stuck with it the past two years. i have learned so much. a few things i learned were; independence, friendship, hard work, mental and physical duration. there were so many times when i wanted to quit but i never did. now i am a Jr and this is my third season playing for BYU. we are starting this season ranked fourth in the nation and our first tournament is in Santa Barbara in the middle of February. we have been conditioning and getting ready for the season to start soon. i am excited to see how we do, but no matter what happens its always a good experience to play on a team.

IA: anything that will prove to everyone that rocky is still a legendary fighter will increase rocky's pride.

Ethos: he is wearing a suit, he works for the best boxer in world, and knows how to read people because he know the emotional effect will work and at the end he knows rocky will agree.
Pathos: he tells him some of the earnings will go to charity, and that mason wants to fight him because he respects him. he tells him it will be great for new stories to tell.
logos: he try's to convince rocky that this will be a good way to satisfy the fans after the computer fight shown on TV. makes it sound like this is something rocky needs to do by the tone of his voice.
Sufficient: yes because rocky agrees to do it.
Typical: he uses standard way to convince a family man who was once a legend. he uses emotion with charity and that he needs to please the fans. he makes it sound like mason wants to fight him because he looks up to him.

this thursday i got engaged! i have been dating him for about three months but we have been friends for over a year now. thursday night i was not expecting it at all. i knew he had got the ring but i thought he would wait at least until the weekend or the next weekend. that night i dragged him to the library to finish some homework when we finished he asked if i help him check something out. i agreed and he told me we were going to the first place we kissed because his roommate wanted to take his girlfriend there. it is a pond down in provo and his roommate needed to know if the gate was still open. when we got there he gave me a jacket he had in the back seat and wanted me to walk up the hill to the pond with him. as we were walking we come up over the hill and the trees were covered in snow, the pond was frozen over, and there was candles lining the dock. i gasped because i was not expecting that at all. he took me out on to the dock and got down on one knee and asked if i would marry him. i got a little chocked up and said yes. he took my hand and put the ring on my finger and gave me a hug and a kiss. he really wanted to surprise me, and he did a good job. i love him so much and am so excited to marry him.

First week of school

I made it through my first two weeks of school and I already feel so overwhelmed and behind. I was talking to my roommate and she feels the same way, she said she feels like she is just doing the bare minimum and just making it by, but she doesn't have time to do anything else. I hope I start to get the hang of things and have a regular schedule soon because Im starting to think i wont be able to handle this semester. Although I have to remember that this is how ever semester begins and I make it out just fine. This semester there will be a little bit more going on then usual so I decided to take less credits, but Im not sure if that is going to help. My boyfriend has been a good support though he always is. Im so excited that we have monday off, it feels like a well deserved break. I don't have any plans yet, but Im not worried, Im sure Ill have plenty to do. i started lacrosse practice today and it was intense. Iv been working out a little bit, but i just found out today that it wasn't enough. We started, the first hour, with practicing drills and stick skills. Then we went to the field house to run and condition for another hour, and that kicked my butt. Im excited for this season. We have a lot of really good players and everyone gets along really well. We have a new coach and I really like her. Even though i feel really overwhelmed this semester Im still excited to play.

Christmas break

Christmas break went by so fast, and I don't feel ready to be back in school. i still feel burned out from last semester. The first week of break I babysat for my parents, my three younger siblings and three cousins, while they went on vacation with my aunt and uncle. I had them for five days and four nights, it was intense. All of the kids ranging from ages two though thirteen. It was fun but near the end I started to get burned out and the last couple of days the heater broke and it was freezing. i was so relieved when my parents got home. The second week i went to Arizona to visit my boyfriend and meet his family. It was so fun and warm down there. The weather was such a change from Utah it was really nice not to freeze every time i walked out the door for a week. His family was really nice and i liked them a lot. He has four brothers and two sisters. One of his sisters in my age and really dramatic she made the trip a little more interesting. It was nice to go down there and just relax for a week before going back to school. His family was so welcoming and i enjoyed their company.
